I watched a film about a man who committed suicide by starving himself to death in a french bog. A marais. The film consisted of the notes the man made as his body shut down. How he was surprised ten days in that he could still jerk off, how he had rigged up a funnel to drain his piss away from the plastic shelter he had made. His sense of humour was an old boyfriend's. It made me think I had mistaken pleasure in nurturing for love.

I think one can live upwards of 60 days, if one is healthy to begin with, with no food but enough water. I recall my nutrition professor telling us a story of 10 IRA Irish protestors in prison who, one by one, starved themselves in protest. As one died, the next took up the challenge. Each one made it about 68 days each almost exactly.

In the film the guy thought that it would be about 10 days without water, but that would be hard, he said, so he anticipated dying to take a month. From 30 days until about 45 he starts laughing and thinks it's ridiculous that he's not dead yet. he's still bargaining with himself, fantasizing about being saved and how he could still make it to the road where someone would find him, and how he would tell his rescuer to leave him alone. he doesn't want his life back so he talks himself into doing nothing, talking about the boatman who will take him to the land of the dead. he lasts about 62 days.

a group of british women protesting for voting rights in the early twentieth century also starved themselves in jail. they were force fed by tubes stuffed down their throats.
