The dog has begun refusing morning walks. The cat, however, would like to pick up the slack.

My dog typically wakes up at 5 AM every morning, all rarin' to go. Sometimes he can be convinced to sleep until 6, but anything past that is unlikely.

Is your dog a puppy?

He's about a year and a half, so he still has a lot of puppy energy. Unfortunately I have a tiny unfenced yard so I can't just let him out to run around.

Puppies are hard work! You have my sympathies.

Haha..thanks. It's getting better. When we first brought him home from the shelter at 10 months old he was scared of everything. I don't think he'd lived in a house before. He's calmed down significantly since then.

Oh I remember talking my cat out from under the bed every time a car rolled in the driveway when I first brought him home. Now he doesn't even hop in my lap during thunderstorms.

I think the word 'lap' is beautiful and tinged with a victorian sensibility.. (especially when factored with a cat)

When I hear the word 'lap' I think of Li Qingzhao's Epilogue to Records on Metal and Stone, in which she recalls spilling tea into her lap while playing memory games with hers and her husband's literary collection.

I like your aura of Victoriana though.
