I am waiting for Michael Inwood's Hegel Dictionary to show up at my branch of the library. Lately many of the good books are purchased for another campus. I have been waiting a week; it used to take two days. What I have to work with are a hermeneutic approach to the preface of the Phenomenology by Yirmiyahu Yovel and Charles Taylor's tome. Neither will be fast and easy.

I am picking up on a general dissatisfaction with the library.

It's certainly taking its sweet time about getting things done this year. It is the second largest academic library in Canada. I am used to having whatever I want at my fingertips.

The library here infuriates me. They don't even label the stacks with all the call numbers found within them. If a librarian (me) can't easily find books on the shelf there's a problem.

That, among the other problem with books over 5 years old not being on the shelf, would be infuriating. This morning I really began to spaz about my book not showing up. I am checking my e-mail for the notification obsessively, although there is no way I will get to the library until tomorrow.

They should make a reality show about us and our problems with our respective libraries. I mean, this is truly riveting stuff.

We could certainly work up the required tension.

And the passion! As our lives slowly unraveled, so too would our grip on reality as demonstrated by our increasingly less rational responses to the routinely dehumanizing actions inflicted on us by the faceless library bureaucracy.

Okay, I have to go ride my bike home now.

I find the trick is acting perfectly rational when I'm behaving perfectly psycho. It gets surprisingly good results, socially speaking.

I'm familiar with the technique, but by 'good results' you mean...what exactly?

I don't know, maybe I don't get extra kind treatment, maybe I get librarians secretly and passive-aggressively holding my Hegel Dictionary hostage.

It's possible. Anything is possible.

It's interesting how you edge me towards paranoia.

That is an unintentional effect of my admittedly occasional automatic writing style, I assure you.

I had to go to the library downtown, half an hour from campus, to confirm that they did not in fact have the book. They are looking for it but it appears lost in transit, with no malicious intent.

The library is undergoing book moves and a branch's partial closure, which seems to have resulted in total chaos.

Chaos in a library's world of order is a terrible thing.
